Oklahoma City, Okla. – June 22, 2010 - The 2010 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby slid into its second day of competition with the first go, second section of the $87,500 added Non Pro Derby and completed the go round in the $155,000 added Open Derby. The Oklahoma City, Okla. show also welcomed 12 ancillary classes in the State Fairgrounds Adequan® Championship Arena.
In the $155,000 added Open Derby, the lowest score to qualify for the finals in the Level 4 was 219.5, Level 3 was 217.5, Level 2 was 214.5 and Level 1 was 213.5. When the dust settled in the State Fair Arena Coliseum, Boom Shernic (Boomernic x She And Chic Dunit) and Craig Schmersal ranked on the top of the leader board with a 228 in the go round. The six-year-old stallion owned by the Boom Shernic Syndicate has earned more than $238,000 in NRHA LTE including wins in the 2010 Level 4 Open NRBC Champion, 2007 All American Quarter Horse Congress Futurity Level 4 Open Reserve Champion and was an NRHA Futurity and NRHA Derby Level 4 Open finalist. The leaders in the Level 3, Level 2 and Level 1 Open Derby remained unchanged.
The champion in the Prime Time Open division was Lundin Farm’s RR Dunit Like A Star and Tim McQuay with a handicapped score of 223. Lundin Farm of Del Norte, Colorado also bred the 2004 APHA stallion. McQuay and RR Dunit Like A Star were also recently finalists in the 2010 NRBC Level 4 Open division.
Saturday will welcome finals in the $80,000 added Level 4 Open; $50,000 added Level 3 Open; $5,000 added Level 2 Open and $5,000 added Level 1 Open Derby divisions.
The first section of the $87,500 added NRHA Non Pro Derby started today. The Non Pro Derby increased more than 40% this year and promised some stout competition. Taka Ticket (Gallo Del Cielo x Significant Shine) and Chad Hartmann marked a 214 early on to take the lead. Hartmann’s Taka Ticket was the 2007 NRHA Futurity Non Pro Level 4 Reserve Champion with Kelle Smith and was an NRHA Derby Non Pro Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 Non Pro finalist with Hartmann last year. Shasta Shadow Ranch bred the 2004 gelding that has more than $75,000 in NRHA LTE.
Gloria Bradley’s Im Spot N Trouble (Mark This Spot x Two Eyed N Trouble) was ridden by Bill Bradley to the lead in the Prime Time Non Pro division with a 214. Gloria and Im Spot N Trouble were 2009 NRHA Futurity Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 Non Pro finalists. Kammerer Farms Inc. bred the 2006 mare.
Katy, Texas’ Lauren Hall and her Reminic So Tari (Reminic N Dunit x Lena So Tari), bred by Judy Anderson, lead the Youth Non Pro division with a 213 in the go round.
The Non Pro go round continues on Wednesday along with 11 ancillary classes and the Platinum Performance Draw Party for NRHA Open Derby finalist owners and riders.
