Manerbio, Italy – September 11, 2011 - On Sunday, September 1, 2011, Manerbio, Italy welcomed the first-ever National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) European Derby. The first day of competition brought in riders not only from Italy, but also Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Great Britain, Sweden and Switzerland. Nearly 80 competed in the first section of the $38,000 added Non Pro Derby for four-, five- and six-year-old reining horses. Monday’s second section will help determine who will be in contention to become the first NRHA European Non Pro Derby Champion.
The lead in the Non Pro go-round goes to Manuel Cortesi (ITA) and PC Customblack Widow (Custom Crome x Jan Crocker by Topsail Cody). They marked a 216.5 for the top score in the Level 4 and Level 3 Non Pro divisions. The duo has already seen great success this year winning the Level 4 and Level 3 Non Pro divisions at the Italian Reining Horse Association Derby. Cortesi, an NRHA lifetime earner of more than $76,000 and an NRHA European Futurity Non Pro Champion, owns the five-year-old mare who has earned more than $24,000 in the NRHA show arena.
"My mare was very good to me today. She was always between the reins, listened to me all the way through my run and made me a very happy rider! With my other mare, PC Sliderina For Me, I could've done better. I only scored a 213 because I was about to go into a small slow circle instead of a large fast. I was lucky enough to fix it in time! Tomorrow I get to show my third horse, and since it's never over 'til it's over, we'll see how things work out on the second day of competition."
Heike Strambach (GER) and Hot Spicy Whiz (Holly Golly Whiz x Rosita Cody by Tobascos Cody, $20,100 NRHA LTE) marked a 216 to place second in the Level 4 and Level 3 Non Pro divisions and first in the Level 2 and Level 1 Non Pro divisions. Strambach and her six-year-old gelding have already won more than $10,000 this year including $5,000 at the Roleski 4 Spins Derby.
Second place in the Level 2 and Level 1 Non Pro divisions went to Angelika Warg (GER) and Gay Jays Little Step (Wimpys Little Step x Genuine Gay Jay by Genuine Doc) with a 214.5. Warg owns the five-year-old mare.
